The outside of each tooth is made of enamel, which is extremely hard and difficult to break, however a tooth can sustain damage that can weaken it through:
- Trauma ( which involves chips and breaks to the tooth)
- Large restorations
- Extensive decay
- Excessive wear of the enamel
- Root Canal Treatment.
In these cases a crown is usually the best way to save and strengthen the tooth. The crown is made to fit over the existing natural tooth and replaces the natural crown (the part of the tooth seen above the gums).
